Nemo me impune lacessit

George Washington was offered the chance to be America's king, or at least a monarch-like figure, but he firmly declined.
In 1782, Colonel Lewis Nicola wrote to Washington, proposing that he take on a monarchical role due to the perceived weaknesses of the government under the Articles of Confederation.
Washington responded with a sharp rebuke, rejecting the idea outright and expressing his commitment to republican principles.
He viewed the suggestion as antithetical to the ideals of the American Revolution. His decision to step down after two terms as president in 1797 further solidified his rejection of anything resembling kingship, setting a precedent.
