WASHINGTON (AP) — Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.

The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 1,500 homeless veterans from the current wars and says 400 of them have participated in its programs specifically targeting homelessness.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness, a public education nonprofit, based the findings of its report on numbers from Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau. 2005 data estimated that 194,254 homeless people out of 744,313 on any given night were veterans.

In comparison, the VA says that 20 years ago, the estimated number of veterans who were homeless on any given night was 250,000.

Some advocates say the early presence of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a decade for the lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they started showing up among the homeless. Advocates worry that intense and repeated deployments leave newer veterans particularly vulnerable.

"We're going to be having a tsunami of them eventually because the mental health toll from this war is enormous," said Daniel Tooth, director of veterans affairs for Lancaster County, Pa.

Hooray for Merca we support our troops. That is if all we have to do is buy a yellow magnet and vote for tax cuts.

Don't blame Bush or the Iraq war. Saddam was thumbing his nose at us. We were compelled to invade.

I actually heard some good news about homelessness yesterday I think. Due to more gov't sponsored social programs homelessness is on the fall.

There are so many more who are going to end up in the streets in the coming years. The head trauma and the ptsd injuries are high in this one and I fucking hope all these Americans that allowed this to happen to these people will at least vote for the care they need. I dont really hold out hope though.

Wait till we bring all the people back from Iraq and the loan thing takes full force. The Rs will them blame the Dems for it.

Hooray for Merca we support our troops. That is if all we have to do is buy a yellow magnet and vote for tax cuts.

That's what really infuriates me. They hid behind these poor bastards, are still hiding behind them, "don't demoralize the troops" "it's bad for the troops" "first, we support the troops" and it is all BULLSHIT.

They support using the troops to further their agenda, that is what they support. They dont' give one rat's ass about the troops, and that includes the majority of their supporters, who "support the troops" while voting for tax cuts and not asking "Hey who is going to pay to get these guys integrated back into society?" Because they don't want to know, they don't care.

If they are homeless its because they are just too lazy to work right?

They are Heros when we get to cheer war and are lazy scum when its tax cut time.

I used to have some respect for some Republicans, anymore I think they are the scum of the earth. Ike would be spinning in his grave to see the party today.

Yeah, Saddam was thumbing his nose at us and he didn’t have a real democracy because he got 98% of the vote and ran unopposed.

Meanwhile, back in America, I go to vote on Tuesday and thought I had taken a hit of acid once I got into the voting booth. For my county executive, I had this ballot:

Democrat: Steve Levy
Republican: Steve Levy
Working families party: Steve Levy
Conservative: Steve Levy

And that was it. No green party candidate, no independent candidate, it was, Steve Levy. And in today’s Newsday what do I see but a huge picture of Steve Levy, smiling his ass off, with a swooning story of how he won “in a landslide with 96% of the vote”.

That’s right. If it happens in Bagdad we call it a dictatorship and say we have to overthrow the dictator, if it happens here we call it Democracy, and put pictures of the victor on the front page with a swooning article under it. And I am left sitting there looking at this and wondering, Maybe I am crazy? Is it me? Am I the only one who feels like I fell through the rabbit hole?

But I will tell you this; this is one vote Steve Levy did not get on Tuesday.

I wonder how our new mercenary soldiers will fit into the future homeless equation...

I had not thought of that one. They may be more likely to become hit men or end up offing people who piss them off. They are well paid so they are less likely to become homeless.

????? How is that possible?

what the hell? Is this for real?

anyway, this is exactly the situation that well-run public financing for campaigns can address. I imagine in that county, Darla, that the Democratic party machine is so powerful, that they can suck up all the oxygen and money, and keep competitors from getting on the ballot and competing.

If someone who wanted to run had access to public financing, they wouldn't have to worry about some authoritarian party machine using its political and financial power to run their candidates unopposed.

they should probably do a better job of transition.. like working out career paths and aiding soldiers to get jobs as they exit active duty.
