How does one become a Fact Checker?

Teflon Don

I'm back baby
Is it a major in college? I know you can major in stupid things like women studies or black studies. Can you get a bachelor's degree in Fact Checking?

Can you specialize or are you more of a generalist fact checker? For example are their people who only fact check medical issues? or energy issues? And within each of those can you sub specialize? A fact checker solely focused on COVID? Solar panels?

Do they have business cards that say Fact Checker on them? When they introduce themselves at parties do they say "I am a fact checker for......"?

Did you know that there is an International Fact Checking Network? Yes. There is is; the IFCN. I wonder if they have conferences to cover the latest in fact checking? I know they are very mad about Facebook lifting their censorship regime.

And how does one land a job as a Fact Checker? I searched the term Fact Checker at Indeed and came up blank.

The Poynter Institute, through its International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), has significantly contributed to the training of fact-checkers globally.

The IFCN at the Poynter Institute has supported over 100 fact-checking operations around the world since its establishment in 2015. This suggests a broad impact.

The IFCN has conducted various training programs, including online and in-person sessions.

There are mentions of specific training initiatives, like the "Hands-On Fact-Checking: A Short Course" designed for college students.

The Poynter Institute is a non-profit journalism school and research organization located in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was founded in 1975 by Nelson Poynter, the former publisher of the St. Petersburg Times (now the Tampa Bay Times). The institute's primary mission is to improve journalism through education, training, and research. Here are some key aspects of the Poynter Institute:

  • Education: Poynter offers various programs for journalists at different levels of their careers, including seminars, workshops, and online courses. These cover a wide range of topics from ethical journalism to media innovation.
  • Media Criticism: Through its MediaWise program, Poynter focuses on media literacy, particularly in combating misinformation and teaching the public how to evaluate news sources critically.
  • PolitiFact: One of its most well-known initiatives is PolitiFact, a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims made by politicians, in news stories, and on social media. PolitiFact uses a "Truth-O-Meter" to rate these statements from "True" to "Pants on Fire."
  • Research: The institute conducts research on journalism practices, media ethics, and the impact of news on society. They also engage in projects aimed at understanding and improving the news industry's business models in the digital age.
  • Publications: Poynter publishes articles and resources through its Poynter.org website, offering insights, news, and commentary about journalism.
