Huge Protests Across U.S. Fuel Push for Police Reform

Demonstrations that began as spontaneous eruptions of outrage after the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police two weeks ago coalesced this weekend into a nationwide movement calling for police reforms and racial justice.

Tens of thousands gathered in big cities like New York, Washington and Seattle and small towns like Vidor, Texas, and Marion, Ohio — in swelling crowds that have been multiethnic, spanning generations and overwhelmingly peaceful. The movement has also spread around the world, with protests this weekend in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Shit in one hand, wish in the other. See which fills up first.

I seriously doubt that any really meaningful police reform(s) will occur because of these protests. They'll run their course and then it's back to business as usual. George Floyd is just the latest "Rodney King" and nothing more. At least the protesters seem to have learned this time that looting and violence won't get their demands met.

Police are being prosecuted for murder of Floyd. Cities are banning choke holds. In fact, most Americans side with the protestors and against Trump.

Police reform had already started to happen in many cities and it is working. There are many more people taking a stand, we will see change.

Trump is out of touch. We know antifa has nothing to do with the protests across the country.

Trump said it's great that George Floyd is dead and happy.

Trump really is a moron and there will be many more books written to that effect when he’s gone.

Crowds gather near White House for 10th day of protests in D.C.

On Sunday, a day after more than 10,000 protesters gathered in Washington — the biggest crowd so far in a week of anti-racism marches in the nation’s capital — hundreds of people strolled along newly named Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House, basking in the early sun and gearing up for yet another planned demonstration.

My bet on the outcome of the police that were involved is:

The one that put his knee on Floyd's neck will stay fired and get convicted of a serious felony. Two will be reinstated and charges dropped. The fourth will either remain fired or be officially reprimanded and convicted at worst of a serious misdemeanor. but will probably not be criminally convicted.

Look at the Freddy Grey case as one example. Same thing. Lots of firings, lots of charges brought. In the end nothing stuck because nothing brought was capable of even coming close to meeting legal standards. Same thing with Floyd. Same thing with Rodney King. Just because it looks bad on video and the media is screaming for mob justice, doesn't fly in the end.

Meaningful reform is more than banning a few minor practices of police. That knee hold the officer used is already widely banned for use by police departments. So, the few using it banning it too is really meaningless on the whole. Choke holds, likewise are already almost universally banned so that won't change either.

In this age of instant media coverage and widespread video and cameras, what is changing is that that aggressive police officer who acts out of anger or without thinking is being held to the standards already in place.

Yes. The problem has been police were protected by prosecutors. We will see more civilian control over the police. D.A.'s will not be able to cover up police misconduct.

DA's won't bring charges normally if they can't win. In politically charged cases they are sometimes forced to. With more civilian control over police, that won't change one iota. The civilian panel can recommend whatever it wants, but that won't translate into a DA taking a case with a marginal chance of success.

Where police misconduct gets covered up is when there is no impartial, objective evidence of an event of misconduct. It's the officer's word against the person involved. That makes for a very weak case against the officer. Body cameras, video and pictures by bystanders, and third party witnesses make for a stronger case against an officer for misconduct than some politically packed civilian panel.

I meant that civilian panels will have evidence from citizen videos.

I think you are right about the 'change' part.
I disagree about your assessment of the 'looting and violence'.

You could be right about the looting and violence, particularly if you apply it to the radical Left. They love to have violent riots with looting.

Has Trump supported any of this? Defended the police in the Floyd incident?

Maybe in your mind. But then you believe there was Russian Collusion

'Derek the Knee' will be sacrificed (20 years in Prison). The other Rookies fired and given meaningless sentences.
Not real confident much will change. :(
