Hysteria

We scare pretty easy. If you're ISIS, you have to look at the national reaction to the attack in CA and feel incredibly powerful, just like OBL likely rejoiced in our reaction to 9/11.

Personally, I feel no different after what happened last week. I obviously hate to see innocent people killed, but there is still a far greater chance that I'd be killed driving to the supermarket, or crushed by furniture.

But I watch TV & listen to the radio, and it seems that my fellow Americans are now terrified beyond belief. What gives on that? Can anyone offer a rational explanation for why that makes sense?

it got to me pretty damned good.

I live a half hour from the incident.

off the 10 in socal.

I mulled and mulled it .

I can not explain logically why I should have felt differently merely because of the close quarters.

its a human thing I guess.

It was not fear

it was sadness

people feel fearful because they feel out of control.

the right in this country preys on that feeling of lack of control an the fear it creates.

Its why idiots like tRump are all about "I am the man who can save you".

cons feel out of control.

they are looking for daddy to save them

Because "it can happen anywhere, to anyone". It's not a regular occurrence, and therefore you're not used to seeing it.

Not sure if this is an apt analogy but I'll give it a shot. I was reading several articles on #BLM this morning. Some want the movement to go beyond just police violence and to stand up for all the black youth killed by other blacks. A good number say no, the focus needs to remain on the police and those who abuse their power and aren't held responsible for it. It was spoken that when there is a black on black killing it divides the community in how to respond. When there is an unjustified cop shooting it rallies the community together around a common cause.

I think most agree one of the biggest role's of the government is to keep the country safe from outside attacks. When that happens people tend to rally together in wanting to avenge it or prevent it from happening again. We know there are automoiblie accidents that result in death but that doesn't rally the country to want to shut down cars. We have groups that press for more safety laws or to crack down harder on drunk drivers but it's not going to rally the country together the same as an outside attack will.

I don't really know what you're talking about. Are you watching MS-NBC?

As for furniture being a greater risk, I worked across the street from the world trade center, came up through the subway station underneath it every day. My kids spent six years growing up in Brookfield, which is 10 minutes from Sandy Hook. I'm also a Virginia Tech grad. So yeah, it's real. But hyperbole is no way to address it

Thingy is just trolling. Anyone who can look at what happened in Paris and San Bernardino and say they don't understand why people are fearful deserves to be killed by ISIS along with their entire worthless family

I hope Thingys children are slaughtered by ISIS in their sleep and that he comes here looking for sympathy so I can laugh at him

I always end up feeling so bad for you.

I hope you can find some more peace in this life. I'll pray for you.

But why do you think that is? Drunk drivers are a good example. We stand a MUCH great chance of being killed by a drunk driver. Yes, there is concern and action about it - but hardly the hysteria we see w/ the "threat of terrorism."

You have trouble with comprehension in general don't you?
Even simple concepts such as the results of fear mongering that the OP is addressing.

Just brought this question up to the wife and she didn't have a good answer. Only thing I come up with is car accidents and resulting deaths have been around as long as the car has. We've internalized the risk as a country. Al queda and ISIS type attacks are new and different thus they draw this type of response. Back in the '50's and '60's didn't they have kids practicing diving under the table in case the communists attacked? More people died from car wrecks back then but the Cold War always dominated the news.

10,000 get killed annually by gun nuts!
14 is not a blip
We did thousands of bombing runs in retaliation
So the kill ratio is prob over 1,000 Isis dead for every American

That's a good description of it, but I'd say that only adds to the idea that it's irrational. We fear ISIS more now because it's new to us - not because it represents more of a threat.

Although I'd say that the Cold War hysteria was at least more based on logic - one bad decision could have destroyed the country & even the world to an extent. And we did get pretty close a few times. ISIS just doesn't have anything close to that kind of destructive power. The best they can really aspire to is the kind of isolated attack we saw last week.

I should clarify, too - this is not a "we shouldn't do anything" thread. I'm all for reasonable security measures & better intel.

This is more a comment on the kind of irrational fear that overtake America, and how dangerous it can be. Definitely alarming to hear demagogues like Trump propose completely un-American measures and then see real support for that.

Where is this 'hysteria' you're talking about ?....I haven't seen it anywhere except on some TV.....

There certainly is some concern and some fear....the fear is that terrorism can happen anywhere in the country, to anyone in the country at any time....
The concern I see is that Obama don't get it....He thinks nothing of bringing more immigrants into the country when he KNOWS they can't be vetted properly.
His own advisers tell him that and he shrugs it off...
There were 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2014. That don't concern you at all ? Its akin to an invasion.

Personally, I think the number of much higher.

============================
Whats the common denominator with Islamic terrorists....they are Muslims.

According to published Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data, the U.S. issued 680,000 green cards to migrants from Muslim-majority countries in the five-year period from FY2009 through FY2013. Among those receiving green cards are individuals admitted to the United States as refugees, who must apply for adjustment to Lawful Permanent Resident (green card) status within 1 year of admission. Refugees have instant access to federal welfare and entitlements, along with local benefits and education services; these costs are not offset. 680,000 is not an estimate of total migration, as it does not include temporary migrants who return home, nor is it an estimate of population change, as it does not include births or deaths, among other considerations. Assuming no change in visa policy, the U.S. can expect to give green cards to another 680,000 more migrants from these countries over the next five years. A green card entitles recipients to access federal benefits, lifetime residency, work authorization, and a direct route to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Not only could they be dangerous, they are a drain on our economy.
Just as we can't the policemen of the world, nor can we be the nursemaids of the world.

One of the terrorists in CA. just entered the country last year with out a bit of trouble....that alone proves the vetting process is inadequate...

Would you bet your life, your wife's life, you children's lives on the belief that of the 680,000 Muslims that came here in the last five years, none of them are or will turn the terrorism ?

The bolded in the above us hysterics since you apparently don't know you ignorant fearful sloth.

Couldn't really decipher your senseless rant...
Only an ignorant fool goes through life without a certain amount of concern and fear.....that is not even close to 'hysteria'......

You obviously don't understand the definition of the word.

I'd say it gets a lot of play on TV because it's the type of story that draws viewers. ISIS has made it known they want to attack in the U.S. I don't think people should be afraid to go outside and live their lives but I don't think people are wrong to want to know what their government is doing vis a vis ISIS and terrorism.

Waaaa, I'm a skeered Conservative, Trump Daddy, please save me!

Why do you insist on showing us how fuckin' stupid you are.....

You think only conservatives are concern about terrorism....?
How about the cops searching the lake?
Think Obama isn't concerned ? How about Hillary ? Both seem to have alot to say about the subject lately.
