Comey is an insider, bureaucratic, hack. He's the very epitome of a do nothing, follow orders, lacky.
I do not think he is above the law, but he is also not to be singled out for stuff they would never try to prosecute anyone for. He is not below the law.
One can get an indictment very easily. Beyond a reasonable doubt, the very likely alternate alternative would be that Comey was saying prevent Trump from carrying out any of his initiatives.

This Comey case is absolute crap, and it will be quickly tossed. Blanche is the guy who went to her prison for 3 days, talking in private with Maxwell. He gave her everything he could to silence her. He broke the regulations by moving her to a club fed where she gets super special treatment. The plan is to pardon her, a women who procured and trafficked in underage girls.

For me, It's a win already. Not everybody likes giving lawyers thousands of dollars, most people hate it. So maybe, a few less people out there will threaten the president now or at any time in the future. The indictment alone is at least a deterrent. Believe it or not it's illegal to threaten the President. Lots of people are arrested and convicted every year and just because your name is Comey doesn't exclude you.
In fact, it makes the threat much worse. The director of the FBI is a very well connected guy all over the world. How do we know that Comey wasn't sending a bad actor a message to take a shot at Trump? This isn't some average run of the mill dumbass, he was the director of the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, the boss, the big guy. The possibilities are endless. That said, my guess is simple greed and stupidity, all for book sales and his giant ego.
Regardless of what you think, he knew exactly what he was doing. He couldn't resist, he wanted book sales and he calculated that he'd get away with it like all scumbags like him always do. At the very least he now has to defend another felony charge and if justice is served, he'll be convicted. If not, again, it's already a win.
