It is both, of course. IQ score in adults is the result of a complex interaction between "nature" ( your genotype; i.e; your innate, individual collection of genes) and "nurture ( the influence of "external", environmental factors to which you are exposed, like parenting, diet, siblings (?) schooling, etc ).

Polygenetically influenced means that many single genes each with a small influence TOGETHER exert 50% of the INFLUENCE on General Intelligence. Note that these genes do NOT RIGIDLY DETERMINE 50% of your General Intelligence in a "fixed", "hard-wired" type sense. It is best to think of this polygenetic effect as PROBABALISTIC, or like a "FIRM NUDGE". For example , kids who are naturally good at math tend to create a world around them where they can talk maths, joke about maths, think maths, for example, by hanging out with other kids they have identified at school who are also naturally talented at math and enjoy learning more about it.




So, if 50% of the influence on personality, mental abilities ( like General Intelligence/ "g"-factor) and other human psychological traits are 50% heritable (due to an individual's genetic make-up), that still leaves 50% which should be accounted for by external, environmental factors ( or "nurture." But Plomin argues that the research shows that MOST of that 50% cannot be attributed to the TYPE of environmental influences THAT CAN BE PLANNED FOR AND READILY AFFECTED. That is, it is made up of unpredictable events. And of those environmental influences that can be moderated, much of it is really an expression of genes. For example , the way that kids who have a natural talent for maths, change their environment to to make it a "mathsy"-environment. They organise themselves so that there are other kids in their environment who are good at math to talk with, they go to workshops that specialise in "Having Fun With Maths", they check out iPhone Apps to buy in computer stores that feature interesting different math puzzle - solving games.





So basically Plomin and many other scientists who agree with his research findings ( and the data is difficult to argue with, besides it you are a scientist who doesn't believe it you can always repeat the experiments for yourself ) are saying that when it comes to determining what make you you the distinctively unique individual human being, it's pretty much all in the DNA (your genotype) you were born with , (NOT ENTIRELY, but "pretty much") as opposed to the environment. Which has some rather sobering implications, doesn't it ? Especially when it comes to IQ. Because it's a fact that the higher your IQ the better you will tend to do in terms of all major life outcomes: you will do well educationally at college/university, you will do well financially because you will have a lucrative form of employment or your own business ;if you marry and have a family that will all work out well (you won't get divorced after 5 years, your daughter wont become a porn actress, etc), your general level of health is more likely to be good. The worry is.... what about those who have low IQs (low general intelligence), the genes they were born with, according to Plomin, will make being successful in life (generally speaking) an uphill, and often losing battle, to say the least.

There was never a country on earth, I think, where the word 'race' figured so frequently in discourse. How's this then ? Then genes you are born with pretty much determine who you will be ( your physical morphology, behavioural and psychological traits), the nature of your life trajectory. "GENES rule" (and theres fuck all you can do to change your geneotype) Environonmental factors ("nurture") doesn't rule.
