A snowplow attachment for a pickup truck runs $1,500 to $5,000. One driver with such an attachment does the work of at least 50 to 100 shovellers, at a minimum and likely more than 200. That means it is more cost effective to pay a driver like $25 to $30 an hour to plow snow than it is to hire shovellers to do it. An added advantage is you aren't putting people out in freezing weather where they run the risk of frostbite and other cold weather health issues.^^^

I do mine and 3 others. They pay well, but aren't smooth. I have 2 snowblowers, both work well.

The cost of machines, maintenance, storage, etc versus a once-a-season or two hiring a few hundred workers for $20/hour for a 2 days. 200 shovelers x $20 X 20 hours = $80K.I read it. It snows in NY every year. The sidewalks need clearing every year. Whether the snow is 2" deep or 2 feet deep, the process is the same. Mechanization is the way to go. Labor is costly compared to using machinery. That's why automation is so popular.
