If America is not a racist country, then why does Nimrata Randhawa go by Nikki Haley?

THEN HOW DID A BLACK MAN GET ELECTED POTUS...TWICE???

Electing Obama POTUS didn't cure racism because you were right out there literally the month after the inauguration with this shit:

Plus "Nikki" and "Bobby" sound much lighter to Southerners than "Nimrata" and "Piyush."

Let's be honest: to educated and sophisticated people, Nirmata is a hell of a lot cooler and exotic than Nancy, Nikky, or Susie.

But this thread demonstrates that rightwing redneck xenophobes are perfectly willing to denigrate and mock a foreign sounding name.

Which is why I do not begrudge Piyush and Nimrata for abandoning the first names their parents gave to them.

Desiring to assimilate doesn't automatically mean that desire is forced due to racism.

Are you sure? Because that's all it means.

Erasing your ethnic identity in order to conform to an imagined cultural normal in order to be accepted isn't borne of systemic racism?

Think about what you're saying.

as I showed with the Western European examples, they also changed names, and it would be hard to prove that was due to racism

Of course it was because of racism.

Why else would they do it?

In AMERICAN culture, Nikki = cute. No one is stigmatized by being called Nikki.

So right away, you identified a racist reason.

Nimrata = Weird. Foreign.

Racist, yes. You realize you're helping me, right?

Nimrata lends itself to being associated with the only English word that it is similar to.

Right, because of racism.

Only a foreign nimrod would saddle a girl in America with a name that sounds anything like nimrod.

Wow, so on top of insulting the Randhawas, you're also confirming that America is racist because it can't accept an ethnic name that is similar to an insult. Now why would that be, if America wasn't a racist country?

And if that's the case, why are kids still named Richard?

But...Nikki is similar to a lot of things, like sticky, picky, icky, hickey, dickey....

And also, ridiculing a Sikh name, like you're doing here, is racist.

Exactly.

By tying it to "nimrod" the Conservatives on this thread are proving the thesis of the thread.

Nimrod.

You sound like the idiot at General Motors who decided to try selling a popular US Chevrolet car model in South America with a name that was fine here in the USA but was the height of cultural ignorance in Latin America.

The car was called the Chevy Nova.

In Spanish, "no va" means, 'won't go.'

In America Nikki is cute.

Nimrata is the equivalent of this:

^ Another rightwing redneck mocking and disparaging a foreign sounding name.

I cannot say I blame Nimrata for abandoning the name her parents gave her. There are a lot of cruel rightwing xenophobes in this nation.

To be fair, my mom chose to go by her middle name. She's as American as an apple pie. And she makes mean apple pies!!!

Her choice was informed by....what?

Well, knowing her personally as I have for many years I can say with authority that her choice was informed by a dream she had in which she was promised by God a good life with lots of money if she so changed her name. Thanks for asking.

America is fundamentally a racist country and the disparagement of a Sikh name by Conservatives on this very thread proves it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"America isn't a racist country, so now let me explain how a Sikh name cannot be used in America..."

I am not going to go that far, and there are a lot of reasons people can change names. But the conservative mockery on this thread, and my experience with the first generation immigrants in my family renders me pretty finely attuned to latent American xenophobia.

"America isn't a racist country, now let me explain why Nimrata is a bad name..."

Haha. My mom goes by her middle name as well. So does my brother-in-law, who is black.

Right, but them going by their middle names is different than Randhawa going by hers.

And every single explanation from you people on this thread proves the thesis of the thread...by saying "Nimrata" is similar to "Nimrod", and that's why she goes by "Nikki" explains the choice was informed by American racism.

After all, if naming your kid something that is close to an insult is bad parenting, then why are kids still named Richard and Delores?

Does it really sound like "Nimrod"? That would be unfortunate.

Gee isn't it remarkable how close "Rick" is to "Dick"?

Or "Delores" is to "Clitoris"?

Or "Enis" to...well, you know...

Maybe the city of Regina needs to change its name too?

Saying "Nimrata" is an unfortunate name, is also unfortunately racist. :(
