Obama thought it was a good start and it would be strengthened over time. The right works for the wealthy and medical corporations so they fought changes too.
There were plenty of Republicans who talked in private about how they liked much of the ACA, but then voted against the bills to save their jobs. They would lose the donations they needed to compete. That is why we still have a crappy healthcare system. But it is better with the ACA.

When it looked like the Democrats might need some Republican support on getting it passed, Obama finally deigned to meet with Republican Congressional leaders at the White House where he smugly expected to brow beat them into acquiescing and going along with the Democrats. Instead, the Republican leaders, like Paul Ryan, handed Obama his ass. They had the facts and figures, argued rationally and persuasively to a stone-faced Obama that had nothing in rebuttal.

From Obama's standpoint, it didn't matter what was in the ACA bill. It mattered that it got passed. And, it passed by one vote in the Senate--all Democrat--without any Republican support. The Democrats own Obamacare, and it is easily one of the biggest fuck ups of Obama's presidency that it got enacted.
