You in fact cannot sue the maker of a knife for cutting yourself. It's been settled in court cases. So what's the difference with guns?
 
The owner of a car, can be sued for injury caused by that car...even if the owner was not the one driving.

The manufacturers of many things can be sued for design defects that make the item unreasonably unsafe.
