Unfortunate that Trump doesn't give it appropriate thought, claiming as does there is "no reason" for the existing boundaries. There are historical geopolitical reasons just as there are with many other national boundaries across the globe, in this case owing to England and France contesting with each other for colonial outposts in the New World, followed in each country by the inevitable westward expansion.
But then Trump has little use for knowing things.

Quite frankly, the only reason Canada exists as a separate nation is the US was too weak a nation in the early 19th century to invade and successfully conquer it. Britain had sufficient disinterest and entanglements closer to home to make Canada an afterthought.
Like the US "conquered" Mexico but took only part of it - should we get the rest? Like we "conquered" American Indian tribes. So what?
