Really, Tennessee? god who could stand living there?
DAMN .. sure was a lot of people there ..
... at the Million Man March.
If what showed up in DC yesterday was 2 million, then surely it was 2 million then.
I really don't know how many people there were, or how they estimate this, but there were more people than I have ever seen in my life in one place anyway. And it was a really nice thing bac!

The accents alone keeps people from wanting to move there.
watch the shift from the west coast. its going to be a bloodbath. CA has a HUGE dependent population. without the middle class and upper middle class to support them the states going to go into a freefall.

In California's defense, we having amazing weather which will always be an attraction. We have top notch Universities which will attract top companies and especially in the Silicon Valley there is an amazing entrepreneurial spirit. However you are correct in saying there are a lot of dependents here. And the way our state budget is structured it is highly dependent on the rich doing well.

The reason I posted this was because my cousin, who I went to the MMM with, also went to DC yesterday and said he thought there were more people during the March. Of course then, they wouldn't say how many people were there because they wanted to discredit it.
There's a sense of spirituality floating around when so many people of like mind gather.
There may well have been. As someone who has marched in anti-war marches, I know that they always downplay the numbers at demonstrations they don't like. There is no doubt of that.
Well, now that we know which states Cawacko and Chap "feel" are dependent states, let's look at the actual facts:
Tennesse gets back 1.27 cents from the federal government for every dollar they send to Washington.
California gets back .78 cents for every dollar they send to DC.
California, like most blue states, is in fact, supporting Tennessee, who, like most red states, is a welfare state.
Ok, you two can go back to talking about your feelings now!

Thanks for jumping in there Darla but how does what you claim change in anyway what I said?
California has lots of dependents. Has nothing to do with being a red or blue state but I appreciate your provincial view nonetheless. Other states can have lots of dependents as well but it doesn't change California's.
That's a meaningless statement. Calfornia is pulling its weight, and the weight of some welfare states like Tennesee, in its federal dollars. We so far, have zero information on the percentage of "dependent" people California has vs other states. We have not even defined "dependent".
So, what is it you are trying to say?

Chap, I see that they have been hit with a one percent higher than national average unemployment level, and that they have a high number of foreclosures, coupled with huge drops in property values. These are all national problems, which are going to be more pronounced in areas with higher property values, like Ca, Ny and Seattle. I don't see anything about number of dependents, and I am not being purposefully obtuse. Sorry.

Colorado will continue to make a concerted effort to draw businesses from CA. Good tax situation here, plus we can match their weather and abundance of outdoor activities.

Another article that shows where the money in our state comes from. It's not that difficult to follow. Late '90's we had the dot com boom and our state was overflowing with revenue. Dot com busted as did the state's budget. Move to the mid 00's and the coffers are filling up again with the housing boom and Google's IPO. Housing drops state is close to broke.
Now every state has up's and down's. CA is no different in that regard. The fluxuations in our state is what differentiates us and makes the state very reliant on the top end.
I'm open to how the federal government and Tennessee affect that part of our state budget.

I wonder why that might be. Could it be that the blue states have far higher cost of living? Thus, need higher wages to maintain a similar lifestyle, which in turn dictates higher taxes. Yet the Fed does not account for cost of living and thus, while per person might be identical, it is effectively lower for the higher cost of living centers.
I feel bad for the poor dumbasses that live in higher cost of living states.

mainly im talking about the immigrants into CA right now. There prob is data on the balance right now and i don't really feel like looking for it but my point is if the jobs start moving back east (its a wave cycle back and forth) then logically the state has less tax revenue to pay for the services. I have been hearing thru business associates and job pulse that companies are bailing there for cheaper more tax friendly states. Word is to not relocate to CA right now.
