Indian outrage at the strip-searching of a consular official in New York deepened further on Wednesday as the government promised to "restore the dignity" of the diplomat while taking a series of retaliatory measures against US embassy staff in India. Indian MPs queued up to express their fury at the perceived offence to Indian national pride at the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, 39, on charges of visa fraud and underpaying the maid she had brought with her from India.

Arun Jaitely, the leader of the opposition in India's upper house of parliament, demanded the government register its "strongest protest" to the US government for the "lack of respect" shown to the country. The government responded by agreeing it was "a matter of national outrage". US prosecutors say Ms Khobragade, a deputy consul-general in New York, had claimed on visa application documents she paid her Indian maid $4,500 (£2,746) per month, but that she actually paid her less than $3 per hour.
