Trump has an off-ramp to his threat to "obliterate" Iran's power plants. He can say that he's listened to the pleas of Gulf allies, whose energy and desalination infrastructure would be targeted if Trump follows through. I'm sure he'll also receive a briefing on all the damage the US has done to Iran's military, which he can brag about. If he goes ahead, then he's sacrificing the energy and water supplies for millions of people.
