Is it time to end tipping in America?

Perhaps you are none too bright.

Or courteous.

I guess I’m not very courteous then.

As to the OP, I’m just fine with tipping as long as I am in control of how much to tip. I don’t like the system where all the tips go into one “jar” and are then distributed equally at the end of the shift. That smacks of ?…?…? The word I’m looking for escapes me at the moment ?…?…? But that’s what it reminds me of.

30% of Americans say ‘tipping culture is out of control,’ as some businesses agree to scrap tip prompts

In most cases, consumers face more opportunities to tip for a wider range of services than ever before, a trend also referred to as “tip creep.” But recent surveys show shoppers are experiencing “tip fatigue” and starting to tip less — while resenting tipping prompts even more.

“The terms may be understating it,” said Michael Lynn, a professor of consumer behavior and marketing at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. “It’s more than fatigue, it’s irritation.

“It’s not tip creep, it’s tip gallop,” he added.

A good server or bartender builds up clientele and eventually you are serving mostly regulars that you have worked because you noticed they are good tippers.

Profiling also plays a major part in how much you engage with customers.

Blacks generally don’t tip well and neither do Russians. The elderly are usually bad tippers while a younger couple are usually a safe bet.

Men by themselves usually tip fairly well and large parties are almost always money makers.

I would often tip the hosts very well then wait at the host stand and simply seat the people in my section that I thought were more likely to leave a good tip.

Made lots of money doing that

I had a friend who was a server who worked on Sundays after church. She always complained about Pentecostals.
