True, but the oscillations are decreasing. We had the really bad one in the 30s/40s. Even the US dallied with fascism at the time. It's what got Charles Lindbergh and a few others in trouble once the war started. We dallied with it again during the days of Tailgunner Joe and the Red Scare, but it was lesser than the previous cyle. Nixon tried to go in that direction and failed so miserably. He failed so badly that it didn't come up again for 50 years even though the White Nationalist part of it lingered in the shadows until Obama's election. A direct line can be drawn from the white nationalists/white supremacists in the 1990s to Obama's day to Trump.
It's no coincidence that Trump really, really hates Obama. He's a white nationalist even though he's too cowardly to admit it. While the white nationalism is strong, powered IMHO by the backlash of too much LW blame against white Americans, this too shall pass.
