Possibly, but not necessarily. Shinto is popular all over the world, not just Japan. Japan just has an actual name for it.

It is a belief that there are no gods, per se, but only various demons and spirits that exist in parts of nature, such as an unusual tree, rock, land formation, mountain pass, the sea, important things in their life, and of course, the so-called 'elements' (fire, water, air, and earth). Usually such have observed sky closely over the years and mark the equinoxes and summer and winter solstice with major celebrations. The winter solstice celebrations are usually centered around calling the Sun back from darkness. Now that Winter solstice has passed, they are once again reassured that Spring will come.

You will find this same pattern in many indian tribes including the Hopi, which went so far as to document their religion and culture in a book. The coastal tribes here in Washington carry similar beliefs.

You will find it in various religions across Europe as well.

In Japan, you will find a shrine to one thing or another on many street corners. These are Shinto shrines, used to pay homage to whatever spirit or demon the shrine is for.
