A racial slur with an apparent reference to slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin appeared on a portable road sign along westbound I-94 early Monday after the sign was hacked, officials said.

Motorists began calling police shortly after midnight to report the message calling Martin a racial epithet. It was up for about an hour before it was changed back to the original message warning of upcoming road construction.


"Someone either pulled over to the side of the road or walked down the slope, broke into the cabinet and changed the message," said Rob Morosi, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation.

You know I really thought that sign was photoshopped when I first saw it too. But read the article - that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Detroit, MI (by Elisha Anderson/Detroit Free Press) -- A racial slur with an apparent reference to slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin appeared on a portable road sign along westbound I-94 early Monday after the sign was hacked, officials said.

Motorists began calling police shortly after midnight to report the message calling Martin a racial epithet. It was up for about an hour before it was changed back to the original message warning of upcoming road construction.

"Someone either pulled over to the side of the road or walked down the slope, broke into the cabinet and changed the message," said Rob Morosi, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The cabinet houses a keyboard and hard drive for the sign, he said.

Trayvon, an unarmed black 17-year-old, was shot to death in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who told police he acted in self-defense. Zimmerman has been described as white or Hispanic. A special prosecutor is now investigating the case.

The state transportation department is working with the Michigan State Police, which has the sign, to try to determine who is responsible.

It's not the first time a sign has been hacked, but in the past, people put up messages warning of zombies, ghosts or goblins, Morosi said.

"Nothing ever to the extent of the inappropriateness that we've seen here," he said.

No, so let's see then. On one hand we have the Michigan state transportation department confirming not only that it happened, but that this isn't even the first time it's happened (though this is the first time it was changed to something this offensive), and that they are working with the Michigan State Police on the case.

And on the other hand we have Damo, who stated, with absolutely no evidence, that the sign was photoshopped.

So, I'll go with the Michigan department of transportation, the michigan state police, and the Detroit newspaper which reported it. Call me crazy, but that's how I roll.

Since the department of transportation is working with the state police on answering those questions, maybe we will find out. I guess you will have to wait and see.

On a side note; I think it is so awesome how the men here have taken to telling me to calm down, claiming I have gotten hysterical, and that I've "flipped out" every time I calmly, but surely, stick my size 7 1/2 laced up granny boots on their asses and walk all over them.

I own so many of you now I am thinking of having a garage sale. But I tried to think of a sign, like; "Dumb, Drooling, Neanderthals, Asses Pre-Owned For Sale", and I don't think it'll attract a crowd?

I may try Ebay. I'll let you know.
