Is this why Liberal places have kids with higher test scores than the South?

Principal orders teachers to dumb down standards.

"Principal Tells Teachers To Dumb-Down Standards
City Hall Angered; Central Park East High Students Miffed

Andrew Kirtzman HARLEM (CBS) ― Have teachers at an East Harlem school been ordered to lower their standards because many students there are poor?

That's the impression some got from their principal's memo.

And now City Hall has stepped in.

The weather was gloomy Thursday outside Central Park East High School, but the talk was about a controversial memo from the school's principal.

"I don't think he thinks we're dumb," 12th grader Crystal Scarlett said. "He just thinks we can do much better than we're doing."

But not everyone agreed.

Last month, Principal Bennett Lieberman sent off a stern memo to teachers.

"If you are not passing more than 65 percent of your students in a class, then you are not designing your expectations to meet their abilities, and you are setting your students up for failure, which, in turn, limits your success as a professional."

Was he ordering teachers to dumb down their classes?

The memo continued:

"Most of our students come from the lowest third percentile in academic achievement, have difficult home lives, and struggle with life in general. They DO NOT have a similar upbringing nor a similar school experience to our experiences growing up."

Some students took offense.

"That's not the way to pass," 12th grader Richard Palacios said. "That's not the way to get your education, so you're basically cheating yourself." "

When kids don't get good grades, just make the questions easier and voila.
Can we get a voucher system now?

Hummm.........

I do believe he was saying the teachers are the dumb ones...and passing on their lazy approach to the students...must have gone to LiberalColleges...:cof1:

No with this line:
"you are not designing your expectations to meet their abilities"
he clearly means that their abilities are showing up as less and that the expectations on what they grade by should be adjusted to be lower as well.

Wow ONE school and Dano ubergeneralizes.

The real shame of it is that there are easily accessible and available resources for determining which states have high proficiency standards and which states have low proficiency standards.

Here is one from the uberliberal Hoover Institute:

http://www.hoover.org/publications/ednext/3211601.html

You will see that Massachusetts has the highest proficiency standards in the country according to the folks at Hoover. Conversely, the bottom ten are Tennessee, Oklahoma, North Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Nebraska, Colorado and Idaho.

So, the answer to Dano's question seems to be a resounding NO. I, for one, am shocked that Dano's implication is incorrect.

I'd also not that Dano conveniently left this out:

But late Thursday, the Department of Education weighed in. It sent him a letter demanding he clarify his views and state that he is not ordering his teachers to lower their standards.

Hacktackular!

Maybe it is maybe it isn't. But only among liberal innercity schools. Those kids down south are the only ones that take the really hard tests.

I think the situation is pitiful and it's way bigger than politics.
It's much worse in the black community and the lower end whom are much less likely to be nearly as political as all the rich and upper middle class posters here.
They need a thousand more role models like Bill Cosby speaking out. Maybe Obama can help.

and misses entirely that you have decided ONLY liberal schools do it.

I have only seen proof that they do it. This isn't the first time I've posted this, just on this site.
Do you have some evidence that rural Conservative schools do it counsellor?

How can you tell if a school is conservative or Liberal?
By the voting pattern on issues and parties of the parents who live there.
NYC is a Liberal Democrat area, hence the schools are pretty much run by Liberal Democrats.

In this case it's beyond easy, you can tell by the principal's comment about "harsh" conditions and needing to be understanding that he is a bigtime Liberal.

Well, the problem with your ignorant assessment is that the testing standards are statewide standards that do not vary from community to community. Yes, it is true that lower income communities perform more poorly than more affluent communities but the lower income students are held to the same standard.

Having said that, there is a disincentive in NCLB for the states to set their standards low because the NCLB act punishes schools that don;t meet the state standard. If the state standard is low, more schools meet the standard and there is no punishment imposes. Conversely, the higher the state standard, fewer schools meet is and more schools are punished.

You do realize that you haven't proved that this school lowered any standards at all don't you? The DoE stepped in:

But late Thursday, the Department of Education weighed in. It sent him a letter demanding he clarify his views and state that he is not ordering his teachers to lower their standards.

So, do you have some evidence that so-called liberal schools do it?

I'd point out, again that liberal Massachusetts has the highest statewide standards whereas conservative Tennessee has the weakest standards.
