There seem to be some people of whom one must say that no matter what the blessings a benign fate is able to pour upon them they will somehow always blow it, opting for futile war, hunger and poverty rather than accepting disappointment and getting on with life. One such people always seem to be the Palestinians. Back in 1948 it was the United Nations – not the British – who voted to allocate a small part of the former Ottoman Empire into a national home for the world’s Jews.
The resident Arabs were outraged and following the urgings of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem went to war. They lost resoundingly and have been losing ever since. Among the trendy Left there is huge sympathy for them which goes on and on. But nearly two million Arabs live in Israel with full civil rights and are well represented in the Knesset.
Scores of times since then there have been chances to make peace and develop Palestine into a viable, nay prosperous, republic co-existing with Israel in peace and harmony. On each, usually following the leader-ship of the now-dead Yasser Arafat, they chose hopeless war.
EVERY dollar of the millions donated was spent not on investments to build a state with a rich economy but on weapons to be fired pointlessly across the border into Israel. They launched three more wars and lost them all badly, forgoing more land each time. But why? The land is fertile, the rivers flow, the climate is glorious. A peaceful, tourist-rich Palestine could be so affluent.
Instead they live in poverty – and neighbouring Gaza is even worse – spending all they have on weapons, their diet hatred, fomented by one rotten leader after another.
