It's Time for Some Real Socialism

Jarod started a discussion about marijuana laws and I brought up Alaska, and its socialist Permanent Fund. Under Alaskan law, the people of the state benefit from the extraction of wealth -- oil, gas, minerals -- from its territory. Each year, every citizen from infant to elder receives a check from the Permanent Fund. The money comes from taxes on the corporations profiting from mining and drilling. What doesn't go directly to the people is used for infrastructure, education, and other "socialist" needs. Alaska has no state income or sales tax. The corporations pay their way.

Isn't it time the lower 48 does the same thing? Let's tax loggers, oil corporations, mining companies, fisheries -- and redistribute some of those funds back to the people.

Allowing billionairs to skirt their taxes and not have to pay a dime- is putting the tax burden off onto the hardest working Americans- AND IT IS NOTHING MORE THAN WELFARE for the rich- so they can afford to go create joy rides in space for the rich, and buy 3 billion dollar yachts for themselves.

And the welfare we make possible for the rich, far exceeds the cost of welfare we spend on our poor here in America and around the world as well!

DO THE MATH!

ANd NO! I didn't say METH Matt Dillon and TRUTH DETECTOR!!

Oh crap, I forgot to thread-ban Truth Destructor. lol

I agree. I've always liked Alaska's attitude about its great natural wealth. "Yes, you may exploit it, but you are going to give back to the people who let you do so." We need this attitude on a national level.

You can ask a mod to do that for you.

The noted Marxist-Socialist country Norway uses their oil wealth to fund important social welfare programs, and they ensure that national oil company remains under public state control.

I always favored nationalizing public utilities and leaving the private sector to manage TRULY discretionary spending industries like shirts, cars, and restaurants.

On balance I agree.

Capitalism is the best system we have for the production and distribution of consumer products.

Allow me the indulgence of going a little bit off topic.

When I logged onto the forum today, I had notification of a page full of quotes. More quotes than could fit on the quote list.
I was able to check out three of them from leaningright, evince (who's only an occasional penalty box resident), and the Russian flag guy, Cypress.
Every other one was an "ignore" message.

I've now reached the point where I can read roughly one quarter of the posts on the forum, if that.

I would at this point appreciate if the people whom I've put on ignore would be kind enough to ignore me as well.

That way you wouldn't need to quote me. I'm only thinking of your convenience, honestly.

You know who you are because I never answer your comments. Maybe if I happen to see one in a quote, perhaps.

That would be so great.

To have government actually working for the people.

We will have a better chance of getting there if we get rid of government corruption.

Everyone should support the American Anti-Corruption Act.

Until we get that passed, it will be business as usual. The super-rich and the big corporations will have far more control over government than we the people.

Yeah, well that may not actually be the best case.

Think about the big picture of what that policy is doing to the climate.

How easy will it be to reduce fossil fuel extraction in Alaska when everybody is in on the take?

Hello Cypress,

The noted Marxist-Socialist country Norway uses their oil wealth to fund important social welfare programs, and they ensure that national oil company remains under public state control.

What is Norway's position on the climate crisis?

Hello Cypress,

On balance I agree.

Capitalism is the best system we have for the production and distribution of consumer products.

But it must be well-regulated by the government.

Consumers and workers have the government to stand up for their rights, to stand between them and the greed of capitalism.

Nothing else will compel capitalism to look out for the little guy.

Hello Cypress,

What is Norway's position on the climate crisis?
I do not know, and will not play armchair expert by frantically googling for news sources.

Since they continue to promote domestic petroleum production, I suspect their position on greenhouse emissions is somewhat conflicted

Hello? Many in Alaska are native Eskimos. Notsomuch in the Continental 48.

You're talking about taxing people that provide you with essentials. Wow. Why don't I just give you a loaded revolver with 2 bullets and you shoot yourself wherever the fuck you want?

Both feet, twice through the head, shoulder and hip, both hands or twice in 1 hand, whatever. :dunno:

What on Earth does the ethnicity of Alaskans have to do with their constitutional mandate that created the Permanent Fund?

Just like Alaska. I've noticed that Norway's people consistently rank in the top of the countries with the happiest ppl.

But in America, we let corporations rape the environment, extract nature's wealth, and keep it for themselves. It helps that we have a major political party that not only supports this, but has hissy fits if said corporations are made to clean up the pollution that extraction/exploitation causes. And may the freedom gods forbid that we actually TAX them.
