It's Time for Some Real Socialism

[h=1]Nordic Countries Aren’t Actually Socialist[/h]"The Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom, which measures how capitalist a country is by studying regulation and taxation in different areas of the economy, ranks Denmark and Iceland as the 10th and 11th most capitalist countries in the world. Finland comes in at 17th, Sweden at 21st, and Norway at 28th. By comparison, the United States is ranked 20th."

Quite a bit if you're not a retard and think about it.

Its creation has to do with Alaska's constitution, which was written by the ppl in government -- white guys, mostly. The Permanent Fund was added after oil was discovered in the 1970s, of course. Here's some Wikipedia for you about the PFD:

"The Alaska Permanent Fund (APF) is a constitutionally established permanent fund managed by a state-owned corporation, the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (APFC).[1] It was established in Alaska in 1976[2] by Article 9, Section 15 of the Alaska State Constitution[3] under Governor Jay Hammond and Attorney General Avrum Gross. From February 1976 until April 1980, the Department of Revenue Treasury Division managed the state's Permanent Fund assets, until, in 1980, the Alaska State Legislature created the APFC.[4]

"As of 2019, the fund was worth approximately $64 billion that has been funded by oil revenues and has paid out an average of approximately $1,600 annually per resident (adjusted to 2019 dollars).[5] The main use for the fund's revenue has been to payout the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which many authors portray as the only example of a Basic Income in practice.[6][7]"

There is no reason -- other than (R)s -- that we cannot have a similar set-up in the lower 48.

Predictably the (R)s hate it, but they know that if they get rid of it there will never be another (R) elected there ever again, such is its popularity.

Jarod started a discussion about marijuana laws and I brought up Alaska, and its socialist Permanent Fund. Under Alaskan law, the people of the state benefit from the extraction of wealth -- oil, gas, minerals -- from its territory. Each year, every citizen from infant to elder receives a check from the Permanent Fund. The money comes from taxes on the corporations profiting from mining and drilling. What doesn't go directly to the people is used for infrastructure, education, and other "socialist" needs. Alaska has no state income or sales tax. The corporations pay their way.

Isn't it time the lower 48 does the same thing? Let's tax loggers, oil corporations, mining companies, fisheries -- and redistribute some of those funds back to the people.

yes. this is a good idea.

a good point.....we should seize all the mineral rights held by Alaska and the other states and redirect all the royalties currently being withheld from the rest of us by Alaskans.......

Just like Alaska. I've noticed that Norway's people consistently rank in the top of the countries with the happiest ppl.

But in America, we let corporations rape the environment, extract nature's wealth, and keep it for themselves. It helps that we have a major political party that not only supports this, but has hissy fits if said corporations are made to clean up the pollution that extraction/exploitation causes. And may the freedom gods forbid that we actually TAX them.

Brazil with that rightwing nutjob they have, is a real horror story on environmental degradation.
Compared to most of the world on balance, USA has relatively decent regulatory safeguards for consumer and environmental protection. But we certainly are not leading the pack, and since the days of Bedtime for Bonzo, our commitment to global environmental leadership has generally foundered.

It doesn't help that we have a contingent of morons on the Reichwing who refuse to even consider dealing with climate change by chanting their mantra: "Yeah, but China."

USA generally used to lead by example, and others would ultimately follow.

I believe social security was the world's first old age pension, and Clean air act and endangered species act were global trendsetters.

You seem to be confused. Alaska is a state, and can do that under the 9th and 10th Amendments. If you want your state to do something similar, then campaign your state.

Yes there is, because paying people to not work is counterproductive. Also, that's natives they're paying.

So fucking what, Matt? Do you have something against a native person getting the same thing that all the WHITE ppl in Alaska are getting? Every resident -- from infant to elder -- gets a yearly PFD check. They don't ask first what race you are.

The citizens are not" being paid not to work." Try reading about the creation, implementation, and history of the Permanent Fund before getting all reactionary about it. Geeze.

If you think, like most biased ppl, that Wikipedia is a "leftist" source, then ask Anonymoose or Phantasmal. Both of them are/were Alaska residents.

Alaskans should get that money, but that concept does not fly in the lower 48. That's where I'm at on that, baby.

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

It doesn't help that we have a contingent of morons on the Reichwing who refuse to even consider dealing with climate change by chanting their mantra: "Yeah, but China."

And to think there are probably backward expansionist types in the china government chanting; "Yeah, but the United States."

How is anyone going to do anything if major powers are all waiting for the others to act first?

Hello Cypress,

USA generally used to lead by example, and others would ultimately follow.

I believe social security was the world's first old age pension, and Clean air act and endangered species act were global trendsetters.

We are no longer the leader in many areas. Point out our high speed trains.

And we no longer manufacture the most stuff.

Hello Cypress,

High speed trains are a loser in the US due to the sheer size of the country. In fact, they are a loser in any large country. Even China has found that out. Air travel is far more flexible and efficient.

We no longer manufacture most stuff because of safety and environmental laws that make it expensive or impossible to do so.

One of my cousins just sent me photos of his ride on the high speed rail from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Yes, Russia.

I believe China has a high speed rail system.

Absolute rubbish. Our manufacturing is as robust as ever. What you should have stated, to be more accurate, is that "The U.S. no longer manufactures ___, ____, and ___ due to cheaper labor in other countries." Fabric and clothing, shoes, appliances all fit into this category. BTW China is now running into the same problems with goods they used to produce and sell to us, namely clothing, shoes, and fabrics. It's cheaper to make them in countries like Pakistan, Vietnam, etc., so they are losing market share due to labor costs, too.

Notice how no matter how many scalps the Regressive Woke collect it is never enough, the call is always for more brutality no matter what.

Don't forget taxes and lobbyists.

There used to be plenty of textile mills in America.
