That's what was so great about living on the beach in the summer.
If I felt like having onion rings, I just went to a stand and bought some.
Same with fried dough.
Same with a sausage sub with peppers and onions.
Same with fish and chips.
Pizza.
Scacciata (Sicilian meat pie).
Everything.

My massive personal failure was not being able to afford to maintain multiple residences because I love the city too.
This world was made for the privileged.
The rest of us are extras from central casting.
The luckier ones don't realize it, though.
When you've had a taste, it's so much worse.

Is fried dough the same thing we call a funnel cake?

Funnel cake (Pennsylvania German: is a regional sweet food popular in North America, found mainly at carnivals and amusement parks. It is made by deep-frying batter.

I'm not sure. It's just regular bread dough quickly deep fried in hot oil
and then coated with either
regular granular sugar, powdered sugar, or cinnamon as requested by the customer.
It is also often available with ricotta cheese inside.

I like ricotta and regular sugar best, but I'll happily eat it in any of the usual ways.
Empty calories. No real nutrition benefit. Delicious.
Like many things that I enjoy eating.
