Jesse Jackson: Trayvon Martin Case Evidence Blacks Are Under Attack

there are still problems that need to be addressed, but then were you around then and whose side were you on
i'm only in my mid 40s, so I wasn't old enough to understand the civil rights issues in the 60s. I grew up in a podunk town of 3000 people. my experience with other races is a completely unremarkable event, because I didn't give a damn that the family up the street were mexican. they had 2 kids my age (8) who were just as happy to play with me as I was with them. The one black girl that lived in our town for 2 years was also a non event. we were such a small town atmosphere that 'cliques' didn't exist for us at that age, so nobody got ostracized. It's a shame that other parts of the world are racist. That doesn't mean that 'just now' we are waking up to it. we've been working on it for decades. jackson is only hyperbolizing this episode for his own profit and it's pretty disgusting.

Jackson is an opportunistic race-baiter, true.

That aside, how would you say the admitted killer of Trayvon Martin would've been handled if he was black and his victim was white?

he'd probably have been arrested, a small two paragraph article would have made the newspaper on page 8, and nothing more would have been said about it.

I agree.

So would you say, as a matter of conjecture, that the admitted killer of Trayvon Martin was not arrested because his victim was black?

the prosecutor himself said that he didn't think there was enough evidence to arrest or convict him at that time, but knee jerk reactionaries can only see a hate crime and would prefer a quick execution instead of justice.

not to mention that the police bungled the investigation, evidence is the key in this matter and they screwed up

let us hope that a conviction may still be possible, if warranted by the facts, of which we do not know all there is to be known about this case yet

I haven't seen anyone call for "execution" in this case. I have seen plenty of calls for justice.

Several sources confirmed for WFTV that Sanford police thought Zimmerman should have been arrested for shooting and killing 17-year-old Martin.

Sources said Sanford police recommended State Attorney Norm Wolfinger review a possible manslaughter charge against Zimmerman.

“Why would Norm Wolfinger sit on this?” Jones asked WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer. “From my experience, it's possible he didn't have enough evidence, and once you make an arrest, the speedy trial clock starts,” said Sheaffer.

That clock means Zimmerman has the right to go to trial within 175 days of his arrest. According to Sheaffer that would have put prosecutors in a bind to hurry and gather enough evidence to make the charge stick.

“Several sources have confirmed for us that Sanford police turned over an investigative summary packet that included a charge of manslaughter. Can you confirm that?” Jones asked lead prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda. “I'm not going to confirm or deny anything other than what I've told you,” said De la Rionda.

De la Rionda is the lead prosecutor now in charge of the investigation that will determine if Zimmerman will be charged.

“We're going to get to the truth, one way or another,” said De la Rionda.

i'm curious to know, what was screwed up in the investigation?

the shooter was neither interrogated nor physically examined - why not

a claim of self defense is thin when the other person was unarmed

besides, at a minimum, it would have determined if the shooter was impaired in any way and if the shooter was assaulted

however, to date, the most damning thing is that the shooter appears to have chosen to engage the victim rather than let the police handle the situation

walking while black wearing a hoodie is no excuse for being shot even if in your own mind you are scared to death by the person, which is just one of the problems of the 'stand your ground' law

however, the shooter's attorney is saying that he is staying with the self defense defense so for now the law does not obtain in this case

why did not the police do more than make a superficial investigation of the shooter

At the risk of having a drunk merge this thread with another one, does the Florida "Stand your ground" statute apply here?

so, in the interests of truth and justice, the prosecutor erred on the side of caution to make sure that IF there was an actual crime, they wouldn't be at risk of letting a murderer go free? wow, who'd a thunk it.

the shooter was neither interrogated nor physically examined - why not
that would be a question for the lead officer on the scene.

a claim of self defense is thin when the other person was unarmed
yet it works for cops most of the time, why?

besides, at a minimum, it would have determined if the shooter was impaired in any way and if the shooter was assaulted
i'm assuming you're referring to toxicology tests? that would have been a good idea and should be asked about from the lead investigator on the scene.

however, to date, the most damning thing is that the shooter appears to have chosen to engage the victim rather than let the police handle the situation

walking while black wearing a hoodie is no excuse for being shot even if in your own mind you are scared to death by the person, which is just one of the problems of the 'stand your ground' law
yet 'i feared for my life' is a justification for lethal force when one wears a badge, even when the deceased person was unarmed.

however, the shooter's attorney is saying that he is staying with the self defense defense so for now the law does not obtain in this case

why did not the police do more than make a superficial investigation of the shooter
lead investigator again.

SmarterThanFew seems to have gained a sudden (and uncharacteristic) respect for police and prosecutors...

i did not say that, i said that the two kids did something stupid or follish

in no way did i condone what they did...or your response for that matter

having said that, maybe you frightened them from doing something more foolish, however, i think that you wasted your time

when you were young, did you not ever do something foolish

I don't think that flipping a shirt at someone's windshield, in traffic,is "foolish".
What do you think could have maybe happened to someone who wasn't prepared for it?
Maybe turning the wheel and slamming into the car next to them.
Mayybe slamming on the brakes and getting rear ended?
etc.

Call the police on them, it is their job.
