For my second home, I borrowed some money from my parents. There was no formal “loan agreement”. I’ve done the same for my kids.

Even e-mails or text messages where this "loan" was discussed, and terms arranged for it. Nobody loans someone nearly a quarter of a million dollars without discussing it a length with the recipient. It needn't be a formal contract. Casual discussion, a back and forth, would be enough to at least put some credibility on the idea that it was a loan. My bet is there is nothing like that.
