John Lennon a Republican and Reagan fan?

Not that this really matters but kind of interesting. I don't know all that much about Lennon but if I had to guess his political leanings I wouldn't guess this.

John Lennon was closet Republican, Reagan fan

The Toronto Sun is reporting that former Beatle John Lennon was, at the time of his death, a Ronald Reagan fan and Republican who loved arguing politics with liberals.

The Sun reports: "In (the) new documentary Beatles Stories, (Lennon assistant Fred) Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn't the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.

Now watch the rightwingers try to pretend they haven't been deriding Lennon and his wife for years...

I bet Lennon wasn't a Nixon fan. He was on Nixon's enemy list and was personally investigated by J. Edgar Hoover who caused significant problems for Lennon and actually tried to have him deported.. It sounds rather revisionist to claim 30 years after the mans death that such a complex and contradictory person was either. John Lennon at one time was an avowed socialist, claimed the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, was an anti-war leader opposing Vietnam, was anti-prohibition, preached revolution, (even wrote a song about it), rejected the conventions for love and marriage, etc, etc, hardly conservative stances. Conversely The Beatles were a corporate band that aggresively marketed and merchandized it self and made millions doing so. He was the only Beatle raised and came from a comfortable middle class background and he moved to the US primarily to avoid punitive taxation in Britain. This is another one of those made up and false, all this or all that dichotomies.

Either way, we can still all agree that Chapman is an asshole for shooting him. I personally am a McCartney fan rather than a Lennon fan, and will continue to be, despite this revelation. And a lot of people still hate Yoko, and think she ruined John (I recall there being a thread either on this site or on FP where some fanboys and girls brought this to my attention)...

AGREED!

George Harrison was the best of the group. A kind and gentle soul. His lyrics were awesome. I wrote a whole term paper on 'All Things Must Pass'

Harrison was gifted, that is for sure. But the collaborations between McCartney & Lennon were some of their best music. Or was it collaborations between Lennon and Billy Shears? :)

Tax rates in the US and the UK weren't that different at the time. Anyway, if he betrayed his country for lower taxes, he should've been executed anyway. Justice was served.

John was like all of us children of the fifties and sixties. We had just discovered teenage and didn't really know what to do with it. We were lost, found, angry and peaceable depending upon the weather. But he was not the only middle class beatle, he and Paul and George lived in Childwall which had been a fairly middle class area before the war but had had some redevelopment thrust upon it to wails of 'this will bring the area down'. The only reason John lived there was because after the death of his mum he went to live with Mimi. Parts of Childwall were very middle class and attracted, in the early days, such UK stars as Cilla Black (nee Priscilla White) and Jimmy Tarbuck. Ray Quinn has moved to the 'better end' (mind you by the time I finish typing this he may be living in Hollywood!).
Ringo lived in the Dingle, a very poor area of the Pool, indeed the word slum might not be far away. I once worked with a fantastic lady who was his neighbour. I remember her marvelling that hundreds of screaming teens were frequently outside her house. I lived, for about six months in an adjoining run down area to the Dingle, but even taking the rats into consideration we were better than poor Ringo.
When the Beatles were given the freedom of Liverpool, a friend of my wife, who lived in the 'older' part of Childwall, said, 'Freedom of the city? Whatever next? You can cut his (Lennon) accent with a knife!'
There were few Tories among the ranks of the young and, in Liverpool, probably none at all. But Lennon was a bit of a boor who found it difficult to handle his fame. Frequently drunk, experimenting with the odd drug and with the arrogance of youth.
In America you only really knew him coupled with that Jap slapper Ono, who took him away from his wife and family to a world in which he only played happy.
Then you shot him.
Reagan supporter? Yeah, like I love bush he was.
