Joseph Stiglitz: Jobs Numbers Conspiracy 'Literally Absurd'

Joseph Stiglitz appeared on 'Up w/ Chris Hayes' to discuss the jobs report released on Friday. Several prominent conservative figures, including former GE CEO Jack Welch, have accused the Obama administration of skewing the numbers to appear in its favor.

"No president, maybe except Nixon, would actually try to change what the Bureau Labor Statistics does or what the DEA does. These are really independent agencies and the idea that they would do that is literally absurd," Stiglitz said.

Stiglitz said the only thing that presidents can do is explain the numbers and put them in context of larger economic tides.

"You don't monkey with the numbers because that would destroy your credibility," he said.

Friday's report showed that unemployment had fallen to 7.8% after 114,000 jobs were added last month.

Although some Republican politicians and conservative commentators have questioned the accuracy of the figures, officials deny any wrongdoing.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis told CNBC that it's "really ludicrous" to suggest that BLS manipulated the data.

In order for the unemployment rate to drop so sharply in such a short period of time, we would have to be experiencing 4-5% GDP growth. Are we experiencing 4-5% GDP growth. The BLS numbers are based on "assumptions" and they are wild assed assumptions.

I know you "WANT" to believe them because of the bad few weeks your boy has had, but it doesn't obfuscate the truth as much as you may want to

If you "progressives" want to be taken seriously, you should heed his words concerning credibility when trying to spin this stuff. NONE of you have ANY credibility with the right at all, why should this socialist ass clown stiglitz be any different?

The numbers aren't real. They are assumptions. Or for the less educated, a wild ass guess. If they were so "real" as you say, they wouldn't have to go back every month and correct them. These numbers are bullshit and except for the sycophant OWEblahblah supporters, everyone knows it. Hell, even OWEblahblah knows better than to just talk about the unemployment rate. He knows job creation is completely bullshit.

Ask yourself this question. If at a minimum 150,000 jobs are needed to jus break even, then how does 114,000 cause a drop of 0.3%

The fact that the libtards are coming out and telling people not to criticize the numbers shows that they know the numbers are bullshit.
