Someone's race is an intrinsic part of who they are...so when you go around saying "you don't see race" because you want to trick people into thinking you're not a racist, what you're actually saying is "I don't see YOUR race, but I definitely see mine", which is dismissive and painfully cynical.
WHY don't you "see their race"? Because you have inherent thoughts or feelings that pertain to certain races, so you're telling yourself that you're looking past all the negative connotations around that person's race, without confronting the negative connotation you have that forces you to look past it.
