The judge was angry. She had ordered a detained immigrant to be released in Minnesota, but instead he was let go in El Paso, where he had to spend the night in a shelter. All his property was supposed to have been returned, but the government was still holding his identity papers.

“Why should I not hold you in contempt?” the judge asked a Justice Department lawyer at a hearing last week. Instead of answers, she got excuses.

Was it detained or arrested?

I hold her in contempt. She has exceeded her authority. I don't care how angry she gets. She should be disbarred.

NYT paywall. I can't read the article. Who is this judge ordering released? What is his immigration status? My first impression looking at some sites on this is that the judge is the contemptuous one here and abusing US law to try and keep someone who should be deported in the US on legal technicalities.

At this point, I don't need to. Jimenez was, and is, deportable. What's got this Biden appointed judge's panties in a twist is that he wasn't afforded 200% + every legal remedy in the US court system. Her actions are contemptuous of the US legal system.

Yes, they do. Jimenez signed a voluntary deportation agreement. Jimenez was deported back to Mexico through the port of entry at Juarez. He then flew to Mexico City. His lawyer says the document was signed under duress and that was enough for this idiot judge to order him returned to the US and Minnesota.

Jimenez isn't arguing that he was somehow legally in the US, but rather that he somehow didn't get a full and fair hearing and his case is based on legal minutia rather than some solid defense.
