Just a Bump

I don't have the numbers in front of me for what the British spent trying to maintain their empire. It is in a book at home. But their economic situation is not comparable. The Iraq war is expensive but is having no where near the same effect on our economy that the British faced in the early 20th century.

Perhaps not, but it is a lot different world now, with many different variables.

Short term view there bud. At this point if we pulled out tomorrow the was is projected to cost well over one trilliion. In total costs. And that money you speak of is just supplemental spending, how much of our regular military budget is being spent there ?
One trillion over many years, it still doesn't meet your 1/4 of all our taxes level.

How much of our military budget is drained into Iraq ?

It may not be 1/4 but I don't think it is far below it once you figure in all the costs. including the war premium on oil.

And how much have we spent on increased gas prices due to Iraq ? Hard to say accurately but a lot.

I speak of the total cost.

Perhaps not, but it is a lot different world now, with many different variables.

The English nearly went bankrupt because of WWI as its debt went well over 100% of GDP and interest payments were nearly half of its budget. The 2008 U.S. defense budget will be 4.4% of GDP. It is not a different world when you compare those two. The two are not even close.

the US defense budget with the supplemental spending or without ? And does this cover the war premium on oil ?

Proposed ? like it was only going to cost 40 billion and last perhaps 6 months ?

the fact remains we cannot afford this war.

yes we can. It may not be how we want to spend our money but it is not going to bankrupt this country, not even close. Britain bankrupted itself. The U.S. is not even close.

Just keep telling yourself that so it does not spoil the suprise and you can blame it on the dems.

I should have known that is what you are thinking and therefore not able to discuss Britain while it fell vs. the U.S. as everything must be Democrat vs. Republican and you can't get past that to have a big picture discussion.

Hey bud I am not hiding in the past like republicans are right now, I am looking to the future ;)

Just wait and see what the historians say about it.

Our discussion had zero to do with partisanship. Many people are trying to compare the U.S. to past 'empires' that fell. Well Britain is one we can attempt to make a basis of comparison on. Maybe others would like to continue the discussion.

;) of course it has nothing to do with partisanship. I am sure Damo or 3d would love to discuss the british empire with you.
Have fun.
