Well, the SCOTUS has had its moments, like under the Marshall Court.

The Warren Court was one of the best when it comes to civil liberties, if not for them, there would have been no desegregation, the criminal procedure rights in the US constitution would probably still not apply to the states and free speech would be nothing more than a truism.
