One of my favorite comedians in the 90s (before he went a little over the edge) was Dennis Miller. He had a 30 minute show on HBO and I was a big fan. He liked to come of with such cultural references, often smarter than SNL which did the same and, later, the Daily Show. People had to be informed to follow along.
In this case, it's also an age related reference since someone who was an adult in that time is more likely to know it than someone who was not. Even so, the US is a big place and many Americans may not have followed the hypocrisy at the time.

Despite all the constant whining from the far Right about "the media" not printing/broadcasting certain stories it's all really based on ratings; if people start flipping channels whenever certain stories come on, the networks will stop talking about those stories. If people click in to see a story, they'll see more of it. It's all about viewership and advertising revenue.

A few weeks ago the subject of spotting mentally ill people requiring a degree came up. It doesn't take a degree to spot mentally ill people, that's just common sense and a little self-confidence. It usually takes a degree to figure out why a person is mentally ill and what can be done to help them.
