My Facebook feed is blowing up today because Harris is from the Bay, and of course she's a woman and a P.O.C. So lots of celebrating being done. And I totally get it.
What intrigues me are the people posting "This shows young girls can grow up and be anything they want" etc. And again, I get it. I have a four year daughter, and I tell her everyday she's going to be a CEO. (Hopefully she has more integrity than becoming a politician but that will be up to her to decide.) I never want my daughter (or any girl) thinking they can't do something if they so desire.
But I keep going back to Amy Coney Barrett. When she was confirmed onto the Supreme Court, a role few women have achieved prior, the Girl Scouts tweeted out a congratulations to her. Yet there was such a backlash they were forced to take it down. I mean, I don't know all that much about the Girl Scouts but seems to me if any group is going to celebrate the success of women it would be them. It's like this unwritten understanding that the success of women is to be celebrated, but only if said woman has the correct political ideology/beliefs.
As a parent of a young girl it will be a weird topic to discuss.
