How does a sane person arrive at the conclusion that progressive liberal policy has caused the gap
and that insanely regressive conservative policy could possibly be the remedy?

There has to be a real sanity or perhaps intelligence factor working somewhere in the equation.

They've been told that black people are stealing all their money and Democrats are letting them. I know you've heard them claim that Democrats are making black people 'slaves'. The rich guys say, 'WE should have that money, and when we have it, we will spend it on you, instead of Democrats spending it on blacks.'. And somehow they believe this horseshit. Republicans have been dog whistling for years. Trump is just using a regular whistle. And they've added immigrants (now by far the group most demonized), and trans people, and women who DON'T KNOW THEIR PLACE, and now 'The jews'. It is an oft used playbook, Hitler being the closest parallel. And they project their hatred on Democrats. We are evil. We need to be locked up in jail. We want illegal immigrants to vote with us. And all of it is sticking. I do think they lack critical thinking skills. And their beliefs are impossible to disabuse. If a fact requires more than ten words to explain, they tune out. There is a reason they believe that Haitians are eating pets. There is a reason they believe trans people are converting children. There is a reason they believe black people are burning down cities. It is much easier to hate them when you imbue them with these evil traits. That is what's happening. We need to root it out. Hopefully this election will be the start, and that Democrats who are given power will USE IT.

If the population is as diseased as you suggest, and it probably is,
there are no constitutional remedies to fix it.
Our constitution requires a level of consensus that includes the above described deviants.
That's pretty clear.

A purge that makes Hitler, Stalin, and Mao combined look like the Holy Trinity in comparison
would be the only salvation for the republic,
and not enough of the left has the stomach for it.
I do, possibly,
especially if the lives could be terminated in a more humane way,
but I'm not a typical Democrat.

However, we have options instead of trying to preserve the republic.
I consider partition to be the best one.

Unfortunately, the logistics of a separation make it impossible. I think we need to do what's possible. My frustration with Democrats is their overwhelming need to 'play fair' when the other side has no problem kicking us in the nuts. The answer is to seize power at the ballot box and enact sweeping changes. I still believe in our better angels for lack of another term. But we cannot act as if this dark underbelly doesn't exist and need only be shown the light. Hate is part of their DNA, and the lack of empathy makes it easy for them. I can't possibly understand why they behave the way they do. I do not get it at a visceral level. I can wax philosophic about why things are as they are, or I can accept the reality and take the necessary steps to ensure those people will never again have any power. It can be done, but it will take a massive effort and it means getting our hands dirty. Maybe not as dirty as your proposal makes them :) but pretty damn dirty. I for one am done pussyfooting around.

I think there is a big difference between those that vote for Trump and those that are his groupies. I have conservative family that will probably vote for Trump. It's Trump's most adamant groupies that are the bastards that are OK with his vitriol and hate. I'd say the hat is a decent indication of the level of Trumper. Buying the trading cards, sneakers, or watches is even more so. The top tier ones are those that repeat his false hateful claims like that of Haitian immigrants. Just voting for him isn't enough.
