Abortion is a top issue with about 12% of the population and almost all of that is concentrated with single women under 30 years old. That makes it a fringe issue with a specific voting bloc, but not something that resonates as a general issue that will win elections.
Abortion is, essentially, a loser as a political issue. The economy and illegal immigration are the top two right now, and both are losers for the Democrats. They can't defend either given the last four years.
