Kentucky wants to ban junk food from SNAP (food stamps)

Joe Biden - "Time to put Trump in the bullseye."
I've been saying this for a thousand years. SNAP should only get you rice, flour, rolled oats, bananas, and canned veggies.

feb 12 2025 FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - A proposal that would ban most junk food from being SNAP-eligible is under consideration in Washington, D.C. and in Frankfort.

“The overall goal is to say that we recognize that these choices are not and do not provide good health outcomes,” said Rep. Matt Lockett (R-Nicholasville).

House Bill 279 seeks to exclude energy drinks, prepared desserts, such as cookies and candy, potato and corn chips and soft drinks from being purchased using SNAP benefits.

Rep. Lockett says it is a bill that is part of a larger goal to improve the health of Kentuckians both on and off the program.

SNAP should not be used or junk food, but the problem is having places near by that has healthy fruits and vegetables available for some
Food deserts are areas with limited access to affordable, nutritious food. They can be found in urban neighborhoods and rural towns.

Causes Low income, Lack of transportation, and Lack of supermarkets and grocery stores

After the BLM riots, the type of stores that have healthy food are pulling out of the neighborhoods with high SNAP populations.

The insurance rates are simply too high, and their profit margins too low, to operate there.

The type of stores which are in high SNAP population areas, tend to only carry heavily processed and preserved foods.

So, instead of giving them a credit card, hire some of the people on snap, to be fresh food distributors. Don't give them a credit card, give them a sack of healthy food.

Junk food from snap benefits should have been banned nation wide a long time ago. Its ridiculous. If you want to eat twinkies go get a job,....BUM. Bad eating habits also lead to massive health problems which also adds to the cost of the free healthcare we the people also provide for those on food stamps. Buy actual FOOD with the benefits you are receiving and then actually get off your lazy ass and cook it!

No Snap benefits at ocnvenience stores would solve a lot of the problems...Offer food and finance management classes in schools, libraries, churches, etc. Suggestions for budgeting and menu planning are always helpful...
Our parents loved cooking demonstrations...
There are healthy options available everywhere...there are delivery services as well, if transportation is an issue...

There are just so many simple healthy things that can be made from scratch on the cheap that would stretch their snap benefits so much further. They end up saving money and getting much better health. WIN WIN. Meatloaf,...loaded with veggies,.......a healthy side salad, maybe some green beans on the side, take some whole grain bread and season with a little garlic and healthy spread,....for desert some mixed fruit. What's wrong with that? Fairly healthy and can feed a ton of people. Chicken pot pie in a pressure cooker? Simple easy things. A million and one cheap but healthy alternatives to pre packaged JUNK.

Exactly... You might be surprised about how many people get really excited To be able to provide great
healthy meals for their families when they're offered some ideas and alternatives... Well you wouldn't be surprised but others might be...;)

Half and half Mashed potato's,...." my creation" :) Mashed potatoes that are actually a 50/50 mix of potato and rutabaga. Cuts wayyyyy down on the carbs which makes it healthier and tastes great. I even like the full rutabaga version as well. Make up some ground beef hamburger gravy with green beans and mushrooms right in the gravy and ladel it over the 50 50's. Peas and carrots on the side and a nice salad. Its good,...its cheap,....its at least half way healthy.

Now chicken.........There are tons of things you can do with it! options everywhere.

There are so many options... So many resources. So much help available... People just have to be encouraged and become comfortable
With what's out there and the fact that just a little Time
Invested can Really make a big difference.... When I'm at thrift stores or garage sales. I always buy crock pots, roasters, just about anything cooking related and pass them along at some of the workshops we do.... If people would stop whining and just step up and help a bit That would solve a lot of problems too...

Rural areas are not SNAP high population areas.

Philly, Houston, Baton Rouge and New Orleans are SNAP high population areas.

In Rural areas, they get their own food, if sometimes by poaching.

The Food Stamp Capital of the US is WHITE and Republican!

In spite of the prevailing stereotypes and assumptions about who uses SNAP Food Stamp benefits the most in the United States, the highest usage is not in Compton, Queens, nor the South Side of Chicago. Instead, a city that is 99.22% white and 95% Republican comes in the lead. Owsley County, Kentucky is a community of about 5,000, residents earning the lowest median household income in the country outside of Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Census.

  • SNAP recipients represent different races and/or ethnicities. White: about 37 percent; African American: 26 percent; Hispanic: 16 percent; Asian: 3 percent; and Native American: about 2 percent. (About 16 percent of participants are categorized as “race unknown.”)

I did a paper on this in college. It is a big problem in urban areas, as you said. If you didn't have a car in St. Louis, your choices were limited to convenience marts close by. Or taking a bus or Metrolink to the 'burbs to a real grocery store. Imagine tyring to lug even a day or two worth of groceries home, while shepherding your kids, on a bus or train.

Last time I checked, Kentucky has a Democrat governor.

The paper I referenced was written long before the Michael Brown killing and the formation of BLM. I can't speak about other cities, but there are wide regions of the City of St. Louis w/o grocery stores other than little mom and pop convenience marts. You might find a banana or an apple in them, and some canned corn, but you're not going to find fresh meat, veggies frozen or fresh, milk by the gallon, and so on.

They sure are, Cletus. I lived in one for 11 years, a rural county 75 miles from STL with a population of ~30,000. We shopped for food at the Walmart. Nearly every time we saw other customers paying with SNAP EBT cards. They also hit up the two food pantries, which had a hard time keeping stocked. Like most rural counties in that state, the population was 95-96% white.

You want to believe the Reagan myth that most recipients of welfare/SNAP are urban black "welfare queens." You are wrong. BTW, many in our armed services, active and veterans, receive SNAP benefits.

The lack of grocery stores is because of all the thievery by blacks. This is their own fault.
