I think history will show that the problem fell in Biden's lap for choosing to break his one-term promise and choosing to run again.

Not a lawyer, but my understanding is that political parties are free to choose their own candidates just as the Republicans chose Trump. Although I didn't follow it, but it does appear that most Democrats supported Biden running again. If not, then that story should be told.
