Romney and Gingrich (who, for some reason, has not quit the race yet) gave speeches to the gun-toting defenders of the Second Amendment.
The “severely conservative” Romney tried to distance himself from “1990s moderate Romney” because Moderate Romney quite liked gun-control measures; Moderate Romney was a fan of the Brady bill and the weapons assault ban.
The new Severely Conservative version of Romney knows he has some backpedaling to do, and he gave it the old college try.
Newton Leroy Gingrich, for his part, decided to go the distance during his speech to the NRA, making wild claims about arming everyone on the planet and proposing a UN treaty that would make gun ownership a universal human right...
Desperate for attention and trying to get back into a conversation that has passed him by, the still-technically-running candidate said he will submit a treaty to the United Nations that would make the right to bear arms a universal human right.
“Far fewer women would be raped. Far fewer children would be killed if people had the right to bear arms everywhere on the planet,” Gingrich said. “We should say the Second Amendment is an amendment for all mankind.”
Right, Newt.
Fewer children would be killed.
I’m sure the family of Trayvon Martin would agree.
As for his claim that far fewer women would be raped?
No.
Most people who have been raped knew their rapist.
It’s not a problem that can be solved by arming women to the teeth.
Moreover, it’s telling that Gingrich’s global solution is “lock and load.”
Forget about healthcare as a universal human right.
Forget about gender equality as a human right.
Guns are the answer.
And the biggest global threat — climate change? No sweat! Just put a gun to Mother Nature’s head and tell her to cool the fuck down.
