lawyers and politicians should Die in a Fire

TALLAHASSEE -- Facing a $3.5 billion deficit next year, Florida desperately needs all the money it can get. But millions more will disappear because the state has settled a lawsuit that affects millions of motorists.

The Legislature will spend $10.4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over allegations that the state illegally sold drivers' personal information to marketing firms over a four-year period in violation of a federal law barring the practice. The state made $27 million each year on the deal, according to the lawsuit.

The settlement to drivers? $1.

Drivers who held a license, car registration or state-issued ID from June 1, 2000, through Sept. 30, 2004, will get a one-time credit of $1 when they register or renew a registration between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010.

''Just one dollar?'' Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, asked in a committee hearing on the settlement.

The four South Florida motorists who sued will get $3,000 each, and five law firms that pursued the case for more than six years will divide $2.85 million in legal fees, which is separate from credits paid to consumers.

This is why people should despise government and make them our servants again, not our masters.

This is the best part,

The state formally denied any wrongdoing.

''No one's hurt, no one's injured, and we're paying $10 million?'' said Sen. Larcenia Bullard, D-Miami.

''It's $10 million or the potential is in the billions,'' replied Steven Fielder, lobbyist for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The state broke a federal law, yet deny wrongdoing and bitch that ALL they are paying is 10 mil

And who was gov of FL when this was done?
What party controlled the state govt?

who cares
who cares
and still, who cares. the legislature is responsible for both the money that they have to shell out and for not keeping tabs on the executive branch. Fuck which party was in control.

the hating lawyers is sorely ignorant of the facts as to exactly why the state paid....let's look at his opening post more closely to find out why lawyers are NOT the bad guys here:

The state made $27 million each year on the deal, according to the lawsuit.

sorry peeps...the law doesn't like people profiting from bad acts

I'd be curious what his point was. Was it that this would not happen under Democrats?

This is the 'hating lawyers' part....

Yes. The revolution will come quicker if we realize both parties work to screw us. The things they agree on, globalization and state power, are the things designed to screw us the most.

I dunno we seem to be pretty good at screwing ourselves.
Personal debt loads?
Frivilous spending?
Status purchases?
Buying imported stuff?

WE are the root of the problem.
Or at least eager to participate.

dude...five lawfirms splitting 2.85 million for six years of work, assuming all the costs and risks of not getting anything back and you hate them for that?

$2,850,000 / 6 = $475,000 a year / 5 firms = $95,000 a year

why would you hate a lawfirm that took on this case that changed a bad government practice and benefited all citizens, not just the named or other plaintiffs in the suit, but all of the state. $3,000 is more than they had in the beginning....those lawfirms have overhead, you know, operating expenses etc....so that $95,000 comes out to maybe $10,000 profit a year....

trust me, they didn't do this for money

you getting behind on the memo points....

ITS ALL BUSH'S FAULT

Wrongo Bush is mostly our fault.
He was elected.
election fraud stuff aside.

what!

i never got the memo that this is our fault...i thought everything is/was bush's fault....

interesting point you raise...so....if we elect someone, then we are responsible for their decisions...

To a certain extent yes, especially if you rally behind that person you voted for and support them.

You are in effect giving them your nod or proxy to do their part in running the govt.

that is different than:

bush is mostly our fault

i like the caveats presented here.

Nope that it DID hapopen under Republicans :clink:

John Ellis Bush was governor.

Hell, you should see the way Dems handle money here in WA. Gov. Gregoire spent us into a $5 billion deficit, lied about it, got re-elected, and then finally admitted that we have one.

In regard to transportation, the state wasted millions trying to expand the Seattle monorail to a end location that would have benefited no one. The project was finally terminated.
