She was the leader of the European Union. The US president was until Trump came along and declared Putin a friend and NATO and its allies as a drag on the US.

We are just a market to the ownership class. They had no qualms about making china into our financial rival as long as they made money doing it.

Big influence. fact is the EU was the largest trading bloc designed to be competitive with the US and China. They did not want to be under America's thumb, but they were always in friendly relations.
