Years ago when 'Luddites' was a chic epitaph, Unemployment benefits, Food Stamps, Project housing, and MedicAid was created to address the problem of Excess People.
Now, as Automation is replacing more Human Labor, these Government programs may have run their course.

Yang proposed a UBI (Universal Basic Income) as a 'solution' in the form of his 'Freedom Dividend'. I have no idea what the answer is, but at least he was thinking about it and realized it was an issue that needed to be addressed.
 
Now, our Right-wing friends have an Answer to this Problem.
It's called 'For-Profit' Prisons.
The 'Excess People' are incarcerated, either as 'Guards' or 'Prisoners'.
It's a clever device to 'make money' and solve the Problem at the same time.

Those programs will need to be expanded. But we need an identity check for a society that will no longer see value in the protestant work ethic because there will be substantially less work to do. Or at the very least the nature of human labor will have to change. Maybe 4 day work weeks. We most assuredly need job training programs for the jobs of the future so people can transition if they lose their job.

I wonder if we'll ever face the ethical question of robot slavery.

Countries that are a lot less afraid of the "socialism" boogeyman than ours have been grappling with this issue for a while now. That's when the concept of a guaranteed income is brought up. We will always need less-skilled ppl for service type jobs; along with providing two years of community college at no cost, let's also fund trade schools for those who are not interested in academic learning.

I'm not fully on board with UBI, but automation does make the best case for it. And you'd be surprised how many low skill service jobs can be replaced - self driving cars represents a huge chuck of lost jobs. Even high skill service jobs can be replaced by a computer.

And for other countries, especially more 3rd world ones, they are closer to going the luddite route which implies a preexisting level of social community and a reaction to how technology has changed that relationship - and mechanization is no different than automation . In college I remember reading about rice farmers in Malaysia. It used to employ hundreds of people per farm and they'd all get very substatial Christmas bonuses as part of the cultural relationship between employer and employee - but due to mechanization - most got laid off. Those rice workers came back and destroyed those new farm equipment. And threatened if anyone else modernized they'd do it again.

No, I just don't want trolls or people who have such a different way of viewing things that any conversation is impossible because we can't even agree on basic facts or logic.

I actually look forward to disagreement. But among people who generally agree those disagreements would less hostile and would be capable of talking about the issue in similar terms of understanding.

Telling the truth isn't trolling and you've confirmed by your last response that I am telling the truth about your echo chamber purpose of this thread.

If your point was that you're scared to discuss things with people that disagree with you, you made it. If you're claiming that you want to have a true discussion, you're a goddamn liar.
