You lied to the border agent who ax'd you if you had anything to declare.

the border agent asked me no such thing. When I arrived at the crossing, I had to push a button. A light came on. If it had been a green light, my car would have been waved through with no inspection whatsoever. If red - which is was for me - the car is directed to a special lane where agents fully inspect the contents of the car to whatever minute degree they see fit. I drove to that lane. They asked me no questions. They inspected my car to the extent they deemed appropriate, and then they waved me through. End of story.
