Let's get real, the only way to solve the spending/debt problem

You either got to cut defense, healthcare or SS, those are the biggies.
Why don't the Dems propose some cuts big cuts to the navy, regardless of how you feel about Iraq, there is no reason the navy budget cannot undergo big cuts. There's more than just the Iraq war, maybe some of you Dems can push your reps to do that?

SS is currently a self supproting beast. And would be for 20-30 more years if we had not spent the surplus as general revenue.

i keep hoping that they'd cut the funding for the iraq war and get us out of there to start.

oh and furthermore

:gives:

Get rid of the department of agriculture.

Why does agriculture get it's own department? Fucking computer engineers, for christ sake, are even a larger part of the economy, and they don't get their own department to hand them out pork.

The navy is what I would cut in defense the least. The navy is the primary defensive force. We don't need all the offense.

THe graph includes a lot of non-discretionary spending. If you look to discretionayr spending alone, the Defense budget takes up about half of all discretionary spending. I have long-advocated for decreasing the Defense budget but the Democrats are either (a) too connected to the military-industrial types (Murtha) or (b) too afraid to look "weak" on defense if they are planning to attempt a run for higher office (Kerry - Remember Zell Miller's "spitballs" speech).

The rest are too few in number to get it done.

Agriculture accounts for 1 in 6 jobs in this country or something like that. either directly or indirectly.

butt then I guess we should just import all our food like we do electronics...

Yeah, US. 1% of the economy become 1/6th in some number systems, I guess.

*insert something about Chinese and how we should ban imports here*

Naah I will leave that for Asshat :D

I just do not think we should be dependent of imports for our food. Being that way on oil is bad enough.

Also Ag products make up a noticeable percentage of our exports.

As I pointed out in the other post where Dano rants about spending, the part we should be most angry about is INTEREST ON THE DEBT. Hundreds of billions of dollars spent for WHICH WE GET NOTHING.

How much has that number risen due to these numbers?

Total Public Debt Outstanding:

2001: 5,806,151,389,190.21

2007: 9,062,552,400,356.63

Think about it.

Yeah, we don't want relations built on trade with foreign nations that we might need to invade later.

That was sarcastic, in case anyone misses it. Nothing wrong with interdependence. It's good for peace and good economically.

To be fair, there is a reason that there are more aircraft in the Navy than in the Air Force and it isn't because the Navy is solely defensive.

Farm subsidies need to be done away with. Unfortunately, we can't seem to hammer out an agreement in The WTO pertaining to such subsidies. If other countries do not do away with THEIR subsidies, then THEY will flood our markets with cheap food, hurting OUR farmers and factory farms.

It is because The Navy has the ability to project said air power with MOBILITY.

There is no need to beg an "ally" to allow us to set up a base in their territory when you can simply park a few carriers off the enemy's coast.
