I don't understand a lot of things about the gay community.
For example, we don't have pride parades for the heterosexual and asexual among us, usually.
By the same token, I don't have to understand everything.

My relationship with numerous gay acquaintances is totally unstrained,

Of course a natural repulsion can be an irrational fear. All people are natural. All repulsions come from people. All phobios occur in people. Phobias are natural even if they are irrational. Being irrational is also natural. So a phobia is natural even if it is irrational.
