The punishment is way over the top here. This girl has a clean record. She is not a troublemaker or a disciple problem. She did a REALLY dumb thing. But criminal charges? WTF are you people thinking? Were you ever a kid? Did YOU ever do something really stupid???

This urge to punish and this zero tolerance bullshit are not liberal ideas.

That is not true, I think one said that. Maybe two.

I certainly did not say that.

I am talking about more than just the people who come to this site... I am gave a great example "gay marriage". Liberals are always the ones challenging the status quo, Conservatives tend to be the ones upholding it.

Every time there is social progress made, its the liberals who pushed it.

In a word...Y-E-S we should expel kids when they get busted conducting UNSAFE, potentially DEADLY experiments with NO ADULT SUPERVISION.

One year a long time ago, my roommate and I took every single beer bottle we emptied and set them on our porch. The landlord soon found our mess and informed us we needed to clean it up or get evicted. My roommate then told the landlord it was an "art project" for school and we couldn't touch it til the end of the school year and the old fuddy duddy actually BOUGHT IT!

If that's true then why are school books used by school districts from every state in the union all across this country written and ultimately approved by an extremely conservative group from Texas?

Total nonsense. Liberals tend to gravitate towards teaching, but teachers don't set school rules or punishment policies. That comes from state and local government and school boards. Zero tolerance and harsh punishment is the antithesis of liberalism, and it is the very core and essence of conservatism. Conservative believe in the authoritarian parenting model and liberal believe in the nurturing parenting model.

I hear you but I don't think that was even mentioned as an issue. It wasn't like she was expelled for dropping a mentos in a soda bottle. These were real hazardous materials she was playing with and if someone had been near by they could have been injured by the HCl gas she released. That's what needs to be drummed into her little head.....experimenting is all well and fine but not when it can get somone hurt or killed.

I haven't heard about any different treatment for similiar violations and that is indeed a legitimate topic for debate. Excepting that, this is safety issue and not a political one.

Technically speaking it wasn't a bomb. A bomb requires a detonation and this wasn't a detonation. I seriously don't think the young lady was trying to create a bomb. Toilet Cleaner and Aluminum foil produces HCl gas. She could have serverly burned or poisoned herself or others but not blown them up.
