There were certainly plenty of pogroms, particularly during the Anti-Muslim Crusades. I've known a very large number of Jews, Muslims and Christians, though not of course American 'Christians', and they all seemed fairly pleasant, unaggressive people - I think the nasty stuff arises from crisis times and various kinds of propaganda, certainly the Pope's back then). I get a bit lost with your American references, and wonder if you're not being a bit carried away with the delights of being able to connect things up. I've always found intense convictions a bit hard, though.
