The point is life isn't fair but it can be made fair. Why would you object to that?
Because it's idiotic to think that it's ever going to be possible to make life fair! Life is NOT FAIR! It doesn't matter how much you wish for it to be, or how much you long and hope for it to one day be, it just isn't, and won't ever be! You can't make life fair, for everything you attempt to do to make things more fair for one, it makes things less fair for someone else. We don't live in a perfect world, we will never live in a perfect world, and you will never make the world perfect!
So how should the extension of UI benefits be paid if not by taxes from people who have money? Or do you suggest the unemployed should just go hungry?
I don't know that we should extend UI benefits any more than we already have! At the very least, we ought to have a conversation about just how long we plan to pay people who are unemployed, don't you think? I mean, we're up over 2 years now, should we pay the unemployed indefinitely? Why not just guarantee, if you ever lose a job, you can draw unemployment the rest of your life, if you need to? That's pretty much where you're at with your emotions, isn't it? I mean, at what point is it acceptable to you, to cut off their income source and force them to "go hungry?"
That doesn't mean we can't work towards that goal.
It's beyond stupid to work for a goal that is not possible to achieve!
I always hear about government controlling people. How does the government get in your way? Why would the government not want you to make money? It sounds like what you really mean is you don't want to help those in need.
By passing onerous regulations on whatever it is that I do! By raising my tax rates! By forcing me to buy insurance! By mandating what fees and funds I have to put money into! By telling me what standards I must meet to comply with their regulations! By telling me how much I have to pay my workers! By telling me how much time off I have to give my workers!
I never said the government doesn't want me to make money, idiot! The government wants me to make all the money I can, so they can tax my ass off! I'm not very inclined to make that much money, because my finances are in order, I live comfortably, and if I make too much money, government will just confiscate what extra I make, so fuck it! I will continue to sit on my wallet.
As for helping the needy, I will be willing to bet, over the past 10 years, I have contributed more to charity than you have in your entire lifetime. I don't need some condescending remark from you about my charitable contributions. Your idiotic idea of "helping" people is to further shackle them to the ball and chain of government dependence.
As for that old line "you have to work for it" tell us how, specifically. What, exactly, does an individual have to do?
Be specific. If anyone can generate prosperity tell us the specific job. Where does the person apply? What, exactly, do they have to do?
No generalities like "work hard". Work at what? What job? How many hours? Be specific.
One of my favorite old timers was Stories4U... don't know if you remember him or not, he left this board a few years back. He was fairly conservative, and presented some very interesting threads for discussion. One day, he posted a thread where he said, he knew of a business anyone could go into and make $100k per year immediately, no hard work, with no special training or education needed, and little or no investment. For about a week, he kept people trying to guess what the business idea was. Liberals lined up to proclaim him crazy, and full of shit. No one could possibly have such an idea! What the hell could it possibly be? For a week, people tried to guess, no one even came close. His idea? Story-telling! You see, he went around to libraries and cub scout meetings, dressing in Native American attire, telling stories about how things were for the Indians and such. He made between $125 and $250 per appearance, and usually did several per week.
If anyone and everyone can generate prosperity then there must be specific instructions to follow. Write them out, in detail.
There are tons and tons of books on this, all kinds of ideas for how to make money, how to start your own business, how to become successful in business. Many people have written down specific steps (and formulas) to follow, and their ideas will work if followed. But the bottom line is, the individual has to be motivated to be successful! If you aren't motivated, nothing anyone can ever do will help you. You've got to be willing to do the hard work, to make the sacrifices, to pay the price, but if you have this drive, anything at all is possible in America.
One of my oldest and dearest friends growing up, was a man named Armando. He was Cuban, came here back when Castro took over, with nothing but the clothes on his back. No money, no family, no nothing! He worked small jobs here and there and saved his money, eventually he started a small business delivering pizzas, and after a while, he opened his own restaurant, then he opened another, and pretty soon, he had a chain of Armando's Italian Restaurant's! Yes, ITALIAN, and he was Cuban! When he passed away in the mid 80s, his estate was worth about $10 million. Now, this was a guy at the bottom of the barrel as far as society goes... nothing going for him at all... and he somehow became a success, how? Because he had the desire and ambition to succeed, and he didn't accept failure as an option.
Third example... My sister... 41-year-old mother of a 6-month-old, her husband is serving in Afghanistan. She enjoyed knitting as a hobby, and had been doing little things for all her nieces and nephews, when a new baby was born in the family, she'd do them a blanket or footies and toboggan... and a friend of hers suggested she try to sell her craftwork online, so she set up a little online store. She currently has more orders from online, than she can do! She has a backlog of customers, all paying her good money to produce her stuff. Her husband retired this year from the military, and her reported income on her 1040, was actually more than what he made in 2010. She now has a sales staff, and a call center taking orders. She has also trained several others to help her with the knitting.
Donald Trump, in one of his books, discusses his bankruptcy in the early 90s. People thought Trump was done. He recalls walking into Trump Towers and passing a homeless beggar on the street, and telling his associate... "that guy is worth more than I am right now!" From literally NOTHING, Donald Trump re-amassed his fortune and then some, in less than a decade. Someone asked him was it more difficult to "get rich" the second time? To which he replied, "No, it was actually more difficult the first time, the second time, I
knew I could do it!" Do you see the point here? It's the attitude! It's the mindset of the individual, the motivation to succeed, the belief in one's self and ideas, and the determination to never give up. Not everyone has that, but everyone has that capacity.
