Because a lot of white people voted for him because he was the lesser evil. I know people who voted for Trump that I wouldn't call his base, because they still disagree with a lot of the things he does, and they're willing to vote Democrat if the DNC produces a better choice.
Trump's base is mostly made up of Alt-Right and Alt-Lite types. They're the ones who support him no matter what he does.

Some Whites saw Hillary as worse. Not insane reasoning at all. I didn't vote at all because I saw them as both being terrible.
The fact that there was a "send her back" chant at his recent racist rally shows that many of his die-hard supporters are racist. Maybe you're not racist, maybe you're just ok with racism, but many of his supporters like the racist tweets and speeches.
