In that era you could not be openly gay and be in the military. So transgenderism was not even on the table at that time. It was considered a mental illness as was homosexuality.

But you knew that right?

Transgenderism is a mental illness. The best indicator of that is that transgenders have a nearly 50% suicide rate (look it up). That is higher than you find in political prison camps, concentration camps, among prisoners in the worst prisons on the planet, so you can't chalk it up to some sort of repression or phobia by the public.

Unless you think suicide is somehow normal and sane, transgenders obviously have mental illness issues they need to deal with.

That may be. But, I think we are all here for a reason.
It is a planet of contradictions. We can find the most beautiful and pleasant things here and the most desperate horrid as well.
Some are born into the lap of luxury while others into the abyss of poverty and war. Then we have everything in between.
Each individual needs to search for their reason to be...... for the reason they are here.
Anyway that's my take on it.
